"I graduated!" Dave was grinning when he came out into the hallway at Courage Kenny on Tuesday.
Two and a half weeks earlier, when he started this series of physical therapy sessions, he had been tested for speed and balance. Anything under 40, and the therapists will let you know that you should only be walking at home. Flat surfaces, familiar surroundings, just short bits. David was at an 18.
But.
...On Tuesday, he was tested again. He was at 44. On Wednesday he was at 45. He is classified as "Limited Community Ambulator."
"That's amazing," Therapist Kelly said. "We just don't see jumps like that. Especially not in two and a half weeks!"
Walking is the biggest deal, but there were other things to do to get ready for the wedding. Tuesday afternoon we headed to the Barber Sharp in Northeast Minneapolis. "Is that Dave?" Kelly Sharp said as he made his way through the door. Dave had been there once before, almost a year ago. Today there was the tux fitting. Dave stood and walked into the dressing room, and when he had the tux on he walked out into the center of the shop.
With confidence.
But the pictures of the tux will have to wait until the weekend.
